I agree with Stan and would also recommend a machine upgrade as well. On
the OS, use what you're comfortable with, or are dictated to run and you
should be fine. NMC runs will on *nix (per Stan), but we have no issues
on Win-tel what so ever.
I recently upgraded a 3-year old laptop (1.8Ghz, 1.5 GB RAM, IDE-based
storage) to a new model (Core 2 2.4 GHz, 4GB RAM, SATA-II storage). The
old machine never had memory leaks w/ NMC or the like. Start-up times for
NMC, or any Java app for that matter, were just pitiful (60 - 70 seconds
sometimes).
The new machine launches NMC in about 15 seconds including login. I do
happen to be running 64-bit Vista now, but the hardware is the reason it
runs so well.

The answer, in my humble opinion is to get a machine on your desk
that runs any Linux or Mac OS X and run NWMC that way, along with as
many other apps as you can manage. No kidding. I run NWMC all day on
my Mac and I have yet to have it crash the OS on me, although I NWMC
itself has failed a couple of times.
