When doing a directed restore to same machine I get the error that cross
platform is not supported.

Elvis;

The first error means that you haven't authorized the destination server to recover the files for the client in question.

The second error means that you can't recover files from one type of file system to another. For example, recovering files that were backed up on a Windows server to a Unix server won't work.
