Hello,
We are in process of configuring NetApp VTL 700 and several Windows
Dedicated storage node (7-10 SN), including 3 non dedicated storage nodes
and cloning.
I wanted to know if any advise on how to go about the config, i have tried
attaching one VTL tape and one Physical lib to master server, due to
complexities involved in managing pools, devices and jbconfig , i wonder
if some one has best practices, experiance with such config.
Right now i am thinking out of box.
Here is my plan do you think it's workable.
Create and attach one ( 1st) VTL instance to Master server with 10
Devices.
Create Second instance of VTL and distribute among Storagenodes ( Only the
Devices and not VTL itself.
Do you think this config option is good one, my thinking is if we loose
Devices on storage nodes, it wont impact backups on master server and give
us failover capabilities while simplifying our jbconfigs ( configuring 10
devices initially vs 65)
Storage nodes can be added to backup server one at a time, not breaking
our primary sever.
Questions:
Can the second instance of VTL be configured to share Devices only, which
server controls the robotics ( even if they are virtual) do i need to
assign control lun to each storage node ( two devices will be assigned to
dedicated storage nodes while 10 to non dedicated sn.
I don't think i should have any problems configuring remote devices in
this config to the master server and storage node what do youthink ?
All of our storage nodes are Windows 2003, Netapp 700 is VTL -Fiber
attached while ADIC i2K is Physical lib with 8 LTO2 drives.
Any potential conflicts, problems or concerns with the config as above, i
know the VTL Tapes would be isolated from primary server this way , but
they would be cloned any way, and if one SN dies the others should be able
to mount the use the VTL based tapes ?
Thanks
