Hello,
The procedure suggested to you is correct, however, sometimes scanner is 
fenikey, try scanning the tapes without any extra cmds, i.e only 
scanner -i (tape path) and nothing else, once you can see the savesets 
that are avallable to you on the tape, you can use saveset recovery for 
the client in question, ( If directed recovery is unsucessfull)
What type of error are you receiving, usually, recovering saveset is less 
memory intensive then directed recover.
Where are you recovering too ? perpahs the problem may be network etc ???
Try recovering locally to the server to avoid using network then copy out 
what you need.
The other posibility is that you may be hitting bad Tape, or other 
hardware failure,look at the logs and may be there is a clue.
