Hi,
A very simple question I am sure.
I have a simple three month backup policy running over three tape sets
Set 'A'
Set 'B'
Set 'C'
So if this were Apr, then tape set 'A' would be March, 'B' April, 'C' May.
I would like to make sure that these tape sets have a two month rentention
period meaning that I can re-use tape set 'A' when i get to the end of
tape set 'C' (May's Tapes).
However my tape set 'A' seems to have a two year expiry time on them, so
the backups fail because it cannot find available media. How do I
manually set these tapes to have expired so that they can be overwritten ?
Any help would be gratefully received as I am two days into what should be
my 'A' set of tapes (but is still 'C'!)
What do you mean when you say your tapes have a two year expiry time on
them? Where are you looking to get that information?
Here is how it works.
A tape becomes recyclable after all the save sets contained on the tape
are recyclable.
A save set becomes recyclable when two conditions are matched:
(1) It is older than the retention time, and
(2) Any save sets that depend on this save set to allow a
point-in-time recovery for the specified retention period are also
recyclable. This applies to incremental and level backups, and this
period can be extended further if there were any failures of full
backups during the period.
Finally, the tape is marked as recyclable the next time nsrim runs
following all the save sets becoming recyclable. It generally runs once
a day but can run it manually if you like.
This is why your tapes are not recyclable when you expect them to be.
This is NetWorker working as designed. If you manually mark tapes as
recyclable to override this you will be breaking the point-in-time
recovery capability and reducing your retention to some unknown shorter
period - doing this is not advisable.
