Hello,
I have seen this behaviour on numerous occasions, as one client backup 
running for ever and group timeout not being enforced eventually, 
effecting subsiquent backup scheme.
Earlier version of networker 7* had this issues, and i was told it has 
been resolved in 7.3 however, i still see it everyonce in a while, i 
usually, set my Symentec Antivirus setting not to scan any thing when file 
is opened for backup and have not made the co-relation that you seems to 
observe, but i will look out for that.
