Hello,
This is expected, unless you do something creative, such as having 
multiple externally attached disk for backup, which alternate with 
write\read activety, having more robust server, Raid settings and Raid 
Card. ( Some Raid settings may be more optimized for performance then 
others, format strip size could also be adjusted on a given Raid to gain 
better performance-if avallable for your hardware) 
Might be able to offload cloning work to storage node in some 
configurations, other then that your server will slow down as you noticed 
as it has to do double the work with cloning and backups.
