What method of restore are you using, saveset, cmd line or GUI ( directed 
recover etc).
Try using cmd line, also verify your backups and name resolution, check 
the demon log for detail, lastly, search for any known issues with client 
version.
If this fails too and your backups are verified and good, try re-
installing client.
Any disk problems ? Permisions ?
