This is something that I've been considering doing, but the one thing that I've never been clear on is how this affects the client index and/or media database. Not trying to throw a wrench in the works, but one of these is endian independent and one isn't - at least I thought this was the case under 6.x. , but I can never remember which. We're at 7.x, so who knows for sure, but I suspect it's not changed. Certainly, Linux and Solaris are not the same endian, at least not Linux x86. Moreover, Legato does not officially support moving from one OS to another. I can't recall how exactly they word the disclaimer, but it's something like they support moving to a different platform but not OS? Anyway, the whole endian topic has been discussed on here before, but I don't remember the final synopsis on it all. I want to say that the general consensus was that either the client indexes or media database (can't recall which) could be copied (e.g. rsync) and the other would need to be recovered from tape because this guarantees that the endianess will not come into play since when it gets backed up it's in a neutral or independent format? I'm not explaining it right, but something like that. And then, of course, you just have to test recovering older data to ensure that everything appears to be working correctly, but I can't imagine there would be any way to ever know for sure, even assuming all your tests appeared to work. I guess you just go for it and as Boston said: Don't look back.

Legato tech support, however, does say that while they do not officially support moving from one OS to another, people have done it, and it *should* work as long as you do it according to the same methodology that you would use when moving from one server to another.

I think you will definitely need to consider this if you *were* planning to migrate.

Can someone point me to any documentation that compares the features of the NetWorker server for Linux vs. Solaris? I am trying to convince some people that migrating our NetWorker server from Solaris to Linux is not in my employer's best interest.
