Are you talking about using the same FC port on a HBA for both tape and
disk? If so, I'm not too sure if this is supported as they access two
totally different types of storage devices and hence *may* require
different set of HBA drivers.

However, if you can use a dual channel HBA with one of port to access
disks and the other to access tapes. HBA manufacturers like Emulex
provide options to install and bind different device driver versions to
each port of the same physical HBA.

In this case there are a lot of chances for I/O contention. The
feasibility typically depends on what "other" roles that the backup
server (or storage node) takes up on the SAN.

Best practice is to have a "dedicated" HBA for tape I/O.

What is the general opinion for use of one fibre card to access SAN
attached disk and then also using that fibre card for access to SAN
attached tape devices. I know that such configurations are supported but
do they work consistently and are they recommended?

  Thanks.
