I tried to do it several years ago and failed.

I can't remember all the details but, I think you had to go into
Directory services restore mode and then do the non authoritative
restore.  I would then have had to keep the DC offline so Replication
wouldn't occur and copy the files off before.

IT just got to be too complicated and risky.

Too prevent this in the future I scheduled a job to copy all the
necessary AD files to a regular directory so I could restore logon
scripts and inf files if necessary.

I also started using ntbackup to save the systemstate to a bkf file as
well.

recovery (to another host and path) of entire SYSTEM STATE:\

Anybody who already did such a funny recover ? (NSR72 on Wintel) Any
problem I did not think about ?
