I have been using the os fields from around version 5.x
as far as I remember I never had problems in 6.x 7.x.y

It usually gets updated automatically after I install new software on
the client (networker version) that is as far as I remember.

this involved Win, Linux, Solaris,

it is only empty in our clusters clients if I remember well (im at home now)
