In regard to: [Networker] backup of / failing, Landwehr, Jerome said (at...:

I have never been able to get a successful backup of / (yet /var works
everytime)

I've tried everything, deleting the index, backing up from the client,
deleting the client resource, upgrading to 7.2.2 on the client, putting
a .nsr file to skip directories, yet everytime I get about 14MB and then
the error "lost connection to server, exiting"

Attach to the nsrexecd processes on your client using truss with the -f
option, to follow forks, and record the output to a file (using -o).

Then modify the client definition on your NetWorker server, so that
instead of using "All" for the saveset, just use / temporarily while
testing. Remember to change it back to All when you're done debugging.

Fire off a backup, wait for it to fail, and then work backwards
through the output from truss, to figure out where the backup is failing.

You might want to do a couple separate backups, to see if the failure
happens in the same spot on the filesystem in both cases.

Also, check the /nsr/cores directory on your backup *server*, and
see if any of the directories under there have been updated recently.
It's possible that the failure is happening on the backup server, rather
than the client.
