Hi Davina, Thanks alot for your help. Yes, your explanation clearly shows what
is going on. It looks like I'll have a bunch set to expire early next week.

I looked at a few of my other "problem" volumes and the explanation carries
over to their (Non-NDMP) situation as well.

Thanks (and to Darren as well). Hopefully this will explain the situation for
the Original Poster also.

  Regards,
  Randy

Well the explanation is fairly clear to me. Today being the 3rd, the
level 6 backup taken on July 4th (and the ones that follow) have not yet
expired. Each of these backups depends on the full taken on June 10th,
(and also on the subsequent lower level backups) in order to allow you
to perform a point-in-time recovery from the later backups. The June
10th backup won't actually expire until Oct 8th, or more precisely until
the next time nsrim runs after the 8th. At that time ALL your older
backups will expire simultaneously.

Looking at it another way, the second oldest full backup is not yet 3
months old, so if you were to manually recycle (=delete) your oldest
full backup, you would not then have 3 full months available to restore
- this would be a bad thing to do. NetWorker is designed to ensure that
you can always restore your full specified retention policy.

My verdict - working as designed. I hope my explanation makes some sense.

Footnote: Perversely, sometimes you can end up using less tapes by
taking more frequent full backups.
