Yes I know you can scan in the tape. Sounds like he did not want to do a
restore he just wanted to hold the tape. He can scan them in if needed.
Why make a lot of work for yourself if you do not have too.

If the tape has gone into recyclable status you can scan the tape back
in using scanner and then use nsrmm to change the browse/retention on
some or all of the ssids on that tape.  This will put the tape contents
back in a "browsable" status.
