In regard to: Re: [Networker] Stopping use of the default pool, Clark,...:

I'd just run into this behaviour when I'd just created a new client
inside of vmware and wanted to "see" it work immediately. I wanted just
the new client and not the group that it was assigned to to be backed
up. So, kick off a manual backup on the client, yes? Well, no since I
don't use the default pool, nor do I have another for non-scheduled
backups.

You don't need one. If you have a group of clients in 'groupA' but
you only want to back up 'clientA.your.domain', just do (from the server)

        savegrp -c clientA.your.domain 'groupA'

Let's say that you want to do a special full of clientA and clientB (like
before an upgrade on those systems). Then do

        savegrp -c clientA.your.domain -c clientB.your.domain -l full 'groupA'

This is a better "test" of backing up a client than doing a
client-initiated backup anyway, because you're doing exactly what the
server is going to do.

The only down-side of doing this is that 'groupA' is active, so a
regularly-scheduled run of 'groupA' (with all the normal clients) would
fail (not start) if it attempts to start while your special run of
'groupA' is still running.

The answer is in the Admin Guide under manual backups. You
cannot depend on group association that is used by any "scheduled"
backups. You must use a tape pool where "manual" is selected since the
backup scheme is handled entirely differently from scheduled backups.
There is no group association for manually backups that are started by a
client.

So don't start the backup from the client, start it from the server but
override the client list and other attributes if necessary.

I also use Stan's method of having specialty groups for both manual and
out of schedule backups. I have a specialty schedule that I adjust for
this run, usually a full backup. This provides the flexibility I
usually need and will put the backups in the right tape pool.

You can do that, but none of it's really needed.
