Vince,

the compressasm instructs the client to compress the data before sending it to 
any type of backup storage (tape or disk). In general you want compression on 
the client unless the data you are backing up is already in a compressed 
format (zip, gz, or any of the compressed graphic file formats).

Compression on the filesystem actually is no compression at all in terms of 
backup size (unless you compress on the tape drive).

Compression on the file system will put a great strain on the server where 
your BDO disks are located as it has to compress all incoming data. 

If you  afterwards backup to tape all data is uncompressed again before it is 
send to tape (to be possibly be compressed again by the tape drive.

I would use compressadm in the clients directive in general, it places the 
compression load on the client and reduces network load in general.
