Retention can always be changed as this is just an entry in the media
database.
Browse can be extended only if it not expired yet, as upon browse time
expiration relevant indexes are erased.
For NDMP backups the indexes cannot be rebuilt by scanner, but they may
be recovered from the indexes savesets if they are still available.
To change retention and/or browse time you should use nsrmm.
Make sure you also extend the retention time of the indexes for your
NDMP client(s).
To recover and merge old indexes into current ones you can use nsrck -L7
ClientName.

I have been asked to extend the browse and retention policies (legal
requirements) on NDMP backups. NW version is 7.1.2 build 325 on Solaris
8.

The browse and retention policy was 1 year. Leagl requirement make them
5years now.... can I change the policy on existing tapes?
