Hi,
I think the standard life time defined for a media is on the no. of passes
it makes around the writing head and could vary from one media brand to
another.
Similarly, there would not be any standard value on the no. of times you can
reuse/recycle a tape.
Legato would mark a tape suspect while writing the data i.e. during the
backups itself. This is when the media on that tape has some media related
error. It is considered safe to either retry the media by relabelling it or
discard this media for further use.
My experience with LTO media - On one of my sites we are using three year
old media with a retention policy of 3 days for the data being backed up. In
different conditions last year during rains in Mumbai, two months old media
rendered useless as Mumbai was flooded with heavy rains and the moisture
spoiled the media. We had to discard all old tapes and start a fresh once
the rains were over.
I will still try and find out what does the manufacturer define as media
life. What brand of media do you normally use?
