Its a mounted filesystem so the 2 gig limit does apply.  And I am using 
older Compaq arrays which also have a 2 gig limit.  I think my errors were 
a combination of the 2.  It was easier to just create a bunch of smaller 
volumes and filesystems and split up the clients.  We have pools for every 
project just in case we are told to hold all media for a project due to 
FDA audit it does not completely lock down my supply of tapes.

Which limit?  I know Solaris has a 2TB limit on the size of an
individual lun accessed by the SCSI driver, but that doesn't apply to
the volumes themselves.

You could use VxVM or SVM to create larger volumes out of the individual
luns if you wanted to use bigger AFTDs.
