I get about 3 months between cleanings on my SDLT320 drives with
firmware 83 - it's only done when the drive wants a clean and is handled
entirely by the L700, I have very few tape errors across 16 drives. When
we had firmware 43 we were replacing each drive about once every six
months, but no drive replacements now on any drive for over a year.

So that's why I suggested you look at the firmware revision.

Yes, 4 times a week. Mon, Wed, Fri are forced cleanings (we use the
cleaning tapes that only the L80 knows about) and once a week networker
does a cleaning (4 drives on Sat an 4 on Sunday). Regardless of what
Quantum and SUN/Storagetek say, I'd say that SDLT drives are good for
about 20 hours before they need to be cleaned.

After a LOT of grief with the jukebox, that this was on of the few
things that seemed to resolve "most" of the problems.

You need to clean 4 times a week?

what is the firmware revision on your SDLT drives? if you have less
that 80 then the drive's cleaning routine is buggy.
