2 NICs. 1 is on a Cisco switch and the "real" LAN, the other is on a Dell 
switch and a Backup Area Network. The clients are split about 70/30 LAN/BAN 
(slowly getting it up to 50/50). The Dell unmanaged switch has performed far 
more consistantly than the Cisco. Amazing what you don't get for your money. I 
guess that pretty little Bridge Logo cast a lot to develop ;-)

How are you distributing the backups to go to multiple NICs?   We use the
storage node name or server network interface.  Are your NICs on different
PCI buses?   Your 1Gb/s limit sounds oddly like my Solaris 8 bottleneck; one
could drive 2 NICs at 500 Mb/s each or 1 at 1000.  It sounds like your
data is not coming into 2 or it is a similar software bottleneck.  It seems 
improbably that a limit of precisely 1 Gb/s exactly could be a hardware 
limit.
