I'm going through the same thing here with LTO2 and SDLT drives.  As one
person already said, pools will solve part of the problem. However, when
you go to do a restore it is going to try and put the tape(s) in the
drive with the fewest mount requests, no matter what kind of drive that
may be.  The good news is that 7.3 appears to fix the inventory issue as
they don't reread the tape labels if they tape has been used in that
library before.

In my case I've had to leave my SDLT drives disabled all of the time
until I need them (primarily for access legacy DLT IV tapes).
