Hello,
I would imagine Open file manager is good option, VSS needs seperate 
licencing and has caused some blue screens in Windows inviroment when 
coupled with SAV from Samentec.
You may also consider Windows 2003 R2 if possible, where VSS and other 
addtional funtionality may be more stable.
If you have san your best bet is to take snap shots.
