I don't do use scanner too much, so a leadoff question: if you run it
without the -i flag, does it scan the saveset in faster?  If so, you
could use scanner just to get the saveset back, and then do a saveset
recover (perhaps just for the file or path you're looking for.)  Either
way, it's going to have to read the whole saveset/tape, but the saveset
recovery method might be preferable in some cases.

The other alternative is to bring up a second server as the old
Networker server, reload its configuration from an old bootstrap, do a
-L7 restore, and restore the file from the old server.  IIRC, you don't
need to be licensed to do a restore.  That might be faster for some old
restores.
