And this seems to have helped. It hasn't crashed once, and its been 
running plenty of backups during the last 24h.

We also added the following to modprobe.conf.local in order to increase 
the buffer size of the st driver, since we use 64k block size on the 
tapes:

options st buffer_kbs=64
