So why don't you split the Window's boxes out into their own
savegroup? And if you have problematic ones, split them out into
their own savegroup as well. It's not bad having multiple savegroups,
though I admit I'm biased and try to keep them limited in number.

I have done that already. In fact, I have four separate savegroups, each with about 50 client entries, all of which are Windows servers. The problem still means that 49 Windows servers will not get backed up if one of those in
a savegroup causes the savegroup to hang.

I'd probably just break them into a Unix and Windows savegroup for now
and see how it goes. If you have a consistent problem child windows
box, look into why it's different from other boxes. Maybe it needs
some patches? Or even just a reboot.

Also, look for size of filesystem or number of files as a hint to
what's going on. And have you snooped the various processes on the
server that are talking to the client? Is there data passing across
the link at all?

Not usually, as far as I can tell.
