I see you mention that DNS lines up perfect. Have you ensured the DNS
entries are correct via forward and reverse lookup via nslookup? Is the
client configured with all the correct alias entries?

Just a thought.

I still have an exchange 5.5 server running NT4 and i
pretty much forgot about it until i needed to restore
a mailbox today. Client is running the exchange module
version 2.0 patch 6 and backups run without error.

Internal system error, please see
nsr\applogs\xbsa.messages in the client system for
reason.
rcmain.c(918): begin_mb_recover()=0x000000003
rcmain.c(942): end_mb_recover()=0x000000003

xbsa.messages says:
XBSA-1.0.1 5.7.0.0.Build.241 517 Tue Jul 19 20:12:35
2005           _nwbsa_is_retryable_error: received a
network error (Severity 5 Number 13): Unknown host

DNS lines up perfectly, normal system restores work
fine. I have no idea why or where it is getting
unknown host from.

Anyone have any guesses?

Thanks,
