Hello Paul and Vince,

I think that I was involved in that case. It was indeed a particularly
unsatisfactory resolution.

The place to start with this is to search Microsoft's support website for
the 80040E19 status. You will see that there are many reasons for this
status, mostly involving IIS and its security constructs. The MB backup
uses Microsoft's ExOLEDB access, which goes through IIS. Some of the
relevant articles:

Q328659: XADM: Error 80040E19 When You Try to Expand Public Folders
Q325923: You Cannot Expand Public Folders Through Exchange System Manager
Q282125: Error Message Occurs When You Connect to Public Folders
Q325920: Error Message When You View Public Folders in Exchange System
Manager
Q822588: You receive a "The object is no longer available" message when you
expand Public Folders in Exchange System Manager in Exchange 2000 or in
Exchange 2003
Q317658: XADM: You Cannot Copy and Paste Public Folders When You Use
Exchange System Manager

It is certainly true that Microsoft does not really support any brick-layer
backup, including the PF backup, and further that most Exchange experts
advise against them as being slow and inefficient, but that was never really
relevant to this case. At the point in which this is failing, the Exchange
Server does not know that we will be doing a backup; it believes that we are
a mail client attempting to read a few Public Folder entries. (In fact,
that is all Exchange Server *ever* knows, for any brick-layer backup.)

If this case is indeed the one that I was involved in, this was our
approach: I wrote a small test program for our support people to provide to
the customer, using Microsoft's code examples in their MSDN, that merely
attempts to open Exchange Server access to Public Folders via their ExOLEDB
protocol, and does not involve NetWorker in any way. That test program
failed in the same manner as does Exchange Module. This is good news for me
in that it exonerates our Exchange Module, but is bad news in that it
removes from me any way of solving my customer's problem, other than to
offer technical help to drive it through Microsoft. I can provide that test
program, in source or binary, to you (or to anybody on the list) who would
like to pursue this further. It is similar to
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/e2k3/e2k3/_
exch2k_getting_a_list_of_folders.asp .

I hope that this helps,
_Scott

Vince,
We had a case open with Legato for months because we were unable to get
a successful backup of our Exchange Public Folders.... We were seeing
errors similar to yours. The problem turned out to be that our PF
database was so large, it was exhausting memory on the Exchanger Server
client. We were finally able to get a successful backup of the entire DB
by listing the top-level folders in the save set specs like this:
MSEXCH:PF/Public Folders/Asia-Pacific
MSEXCH:PF/Public Folders/Europe
MSEXCH:PF/Public Folders/Microsoft_Info
MSEXCH:PF/Public Folders/North America
MSEXCH:PF/Public Folders/South America
MSEXCH:PF/Public Folders/World Wide/Quota Outlook Interface
MSEXCH:PF/Public Folders/World Wide/.....

We basically started drilling down the tree until we reached a level
where it succeeded, then stopped and used that as a save-set
specification... Since the upper level folders are pretty static, we
should not have to change the save-set specifications... It's been
working fine ever since, but took us a few months of waiting on
Legato/Microsoft while they scratched their heads trying to figure out
why it was failing (we also discovered MS does not really support PF
backups...). You might see if you can isolate the error to a specific
folder to see if it might be bad data, etc...

Regards,
Paul

Server: NetWorker 7.1.2.325 under Solaris 8
Client: Exchange 2000 Enterprise Server

Dear Gurus,

I've checked the archives and can't anything to do with this problem. We
have recently started getting an error when backing up the Public
Folders of our Exchange server, specifically:

* mailsvr:MSEXCH:PF Starting backup of folder tree: "Public Folders"
* mailsvr:MSEXCH:PF mbpfsv(1038): Folder tree backup failed for
http://MAILSVR/public/ Error: 0x80040e19
* mailsvr:MSEXCH:PF  COM error: 0x80040e19
* mailsvr:MSEXCH:PF   Source: Provider
* mailsvr:MSEXCH:PF Description: Object or data matching the name,
range, or selection criteria was not found within the scope of this
operation.
* mailsvr:MSEXCH:PF  svmain(930): process_pf_backup() failed with status
= 0x80040e19
* mailsvr:MSEXCH:PF Backup operation finished with errors.

Has anyone else seen this? Do you have any idea what the cause is or
how to fix it?

Best Regards,

Vince
