I do not backup the PST files or do bricklevel backups of the
mailserver. But it is handy to do a recover of "lost" emails. EXMERGE
for Exchange 2000 is multithreaded so I think it is faster than Legatos
bricklevel backup.

25 GB / 87 mailboxes takes about 1h 45m to extract to local disk. Of
course you have to add the time to move the data on tape to calculate
the speed of this method vs Legato bricklevel backup. This Exchange 2000
servr runs on a HP DL380 G2 (1.2Ghz). OS is W2K.

I have not tested Legato bricklevel backup on this server, so I can not
provide any benchmark numbers for the Legato style of mailbox backups.

This is exactly what the NetWorker Module for Exchange does when backing
up mailboxes. Whether you do this under control of NME or whether you
schedule it yourself in some way, it's still going to be a long and slow
process, so I can't see why it would be any better this way.
