Thierry,

(Forgot to note operating env -- which is Linux, NW 7.1.3)
I do have both the server and storage node listed in the "storage node"
field for the clients (nsrserverhost and tapes2). So, I have three server
ait-3 drives and 3 storage node ait-4 drives I'm identifying as AIT-3.
If I set pool full to use all of those devices, it seems to be waiting forever if it can't find an available volume on nsrserverhost. Perhaps I didn't wait long
enough. If you read below -- I've tried setting this so that pool XXXX has
access to only the storage node drives; but when it's time to /restore/
pool XXXX then won't use the drives on the server. If I set pool XXXX
so that it can use any drive, it waits for a volume on the server to become
available, even if there are available volumes on the storage node.

We let endusers restore files, so we can't be in the position of having to
enable devices in jukeboxes every time a restore is necessary.

First, look at your client's configutation for storage node affinity field.
By default, client's storage node affinity is set to nsrserver[host].
If you authorize the client to be saved by a storage node, you will have
to fill storage node name (without the RD= prefix nor drive name, just
hostname).
Be advised the selection is from a top-bottom order.

Next, look at your pools. You may have restricted pool to be
mounted on only server's devices and not storage node's device.

HTH,

Thierry

Objet : [Networker] How do devices get chosen if there are two jukeboxes
and one is a storage node?

I'm wondering if someone can tell me how devices get chosen
if the available devices are on two jukeboxes. One jukebox is
attached to
the server, the other is a storage node. I set up a pool, "Full," so
that available
devices are AIT-3 drives on both the server and the storage node. I
don't have
auto media management turned on. I assumed that if there were /no/
available
volumes for this pool on the primary server, then available volumes on
the storage
node would get used. But, instead, networker seems to wait
indefinitely for
an available tape on the server, even though there are available
mounted volumes
on the storage node.

Why do I need available devices on both? Because the new storage
node uses
AIT-4, but we're calling them AIT-3. I want full and 5/7-level
backups to go
there, and incrementals to go to the server. But for /RESTORES/ the
tapes
have to be restored, if they're AIT-3 tapes, and older than the
storage node,
on the server. If I don't make these devices avilable on the server,
networker
insists that the restore occur at the storage node. The two
jukeboxes aren't
in the same place and the new storage node can't read AIT-3 tapes.

Is there any way to get networker to look for volumes on the server then,
if it didn't find any, to check the storage node?

As usual in Networker, the devil is in the details.
