George,

I noticed this as well.  You will see copies of everything in
C:\WinNT\system32\config\system with an _NSR appended to it right after
you have finished the restore.  Now, when you reboot, the system will
almost complete a boot and right before it goes to the GUI, the system
reboots again, I presume to swap the _NSR files, overwriting what was
there before the restore.  When the system comes backup from the second
boot, the system is exactly how it was when the backup was originally
made.

Well, we finally got this silly system to boot, but we did encounter one
odd problem that I'm hoping someone might have an answer for.

First, we ended up having to put Windows, and the original Legato 6
client, on the second partition (D:\) of the hard drive in order to
restore the first partition (C:\).
We had not previously tried that. I don't think there's a way for us to
install Windows into a temp directory, at least not with our version of
Windows.

The restoration went fine, including the SYSTEM DB, SYSTEM STATE and
SYSTEM FILES, but it didn't boot off C:\, although it did nearly finish.
It then displayed the following error message:

C:\WinNT\system32\config\system is missing or corrupt

We then used the Windows recovery console to check the directory (could
have also booted from D:\ and checked from there, too), and the
following files were there, *BUT* they all had names with '_NSR'
appended to their names, e.g. SYSTEM_NSR, etc:

default
SAM
SECURITY
software
system
userdiff

We then renamed the files to remove the '_NSR' and then rebooted. This
time it worked. Eureka!

Here are two questions:

1. Why did NetWorker leave these files with '_NSR' appended to their
names?

2. Legato seems to document only the method wherein you recover to the
partition where you're booted and running the Legato client from, but
our experience has shown that this doesn't work, but booting from
another partition that's also running Legato and then restoring to the
original partition does work ... well, almost since you may still have
to rename some files that still have '_NSR' appended to them.
