Hilde,

We're using Networker 6.1 on Windows 2K with Sony SDX-500C AIT-2 tape
drives. I've occasionally seen the Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC) errors. I
usually get the errors when I'm labeling tapes (I label my tapes manually)
and it's either because the tape drive needs cleaning or because the tapes
have been used enough that they're getting worn out.

I know AIT-2 drives are supposed to be self cleaning but Spectralogic, our
jukebox vendor, recommends running a cleaning tape through the drives
approximately every 100 hours of use. There's an article on the subject at:

http://www.spectralogic.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=support.kbArticle&KbaseId=2
64

(Note: if the url wraps in your email you may need to put it pack together
to use it.)

Because the errors you're getting are part way through backups on several
different tapes I suspect either you need to run a cleaning tape through
your tape drives or the drives themselves are in need of repair. It's
possible though if the tapes have been used a lot for a long time that they
are getting worn out.

Hope this helps.

Dave

I am working with Networker 6.1 on a Windows 2000 Server. In the last
days I regularly get one of the following error messages:

Afterwards the tapes are marked as full, the drive is not able to unload
the tape (I have to do it manually). It happens to both drives tape0 and
tape1 .
First it happened only to drive \tape2, then I disabled it, then it
happened to \tape0 as well.
In the event viewer is the following message:
The device \Device\Tape1 has a bad block.

and in the log file:
04/26/05 11:37:21 AM nsrd: media info: unload error for jukebox
'[email protected]' detected. Retrying

The Networker monitor shows : tape1 read open error: No error

We use a Qualstar TLS-4222i Jukebox with 2 SONY SDX-500C drives.

Is it a problem of the tapes, of the drives or what else ?

Any help appreciated.

Thanks
