I used to do backups using the flat file method and I never had any
problems restoring any databases. That might just be a total stroke of
luck ofcause, and I didn't do that many restores.
But I would recommend using the notes module and transactional logging as
it cuts down on your notes saves.

When we started using the Notes module and trans logging, we went from
everything on the notes server, since almost all databases (mostly mail
DBs) were changed daily, down to approx 1/20th of the amount of data being
saved each day, it took some configuration of the trans log settings but
its worth it in time and tapes ;=).

And if your 2 notes servers are setup in a Notes cluster, youcoul do with
only 1 notes module, since notes cluster does a nice job of keeping the
databases syncronized, at least thats the setup I currently use, and I
haven't found any flaws yet.

Yes. If you want to use flat file backup, you will need to shutdown all
Notes related services. How you do this will vary depending on what OS
Notes is running on. It's fairly simple to write a script to start/stop
Notes.

Only if you shutdown the Notes server services first (especially if you
set
up the Notes server to use transactional logging). Otherwise, you may
not be
able to restore the file.

We just setup 2 notes servers that we need to backup. I was told that
you
can back them up as a flat file and be able to recover them. Is this
true?

Is it easier to use the module.
