From what I've been told, the bus reset will cause the tape to rewind but

On another note, you mentioned using the scu utility in Tru64. We have
a Tru64 environment and are experiencing problems with io errors and
decode block errors during backups. These errors can be replicated by
doing an mt status on an active library drive from a different node in
the san.

In the Networker admin guide, they say that we need to use this utility
to disable scsi reserve/release but don't say how. Did you have to do
disable these settings through scu, and if so, how?

The Admin Guide might say this, but many might believe this is wrong. SCSI reserve/release exists precisely to protect you from the case you have described. With SCSI reserve/release working correctly your mt command would have failed and had no effect on the much more important running backup of a different machine.
