At the moment it begins backing up a file, it notes "this file is size X". If
it actually puts Y amount of data on the tape and Y is > X, then it will give
the "file grew during save" message. Most of the time, this is a log file.
"File grew during save" and "file changed during save" are also very very
common when you backup live database files (yes, I just use ALL and ignore the
tape/network wastage......too large to set up a directive, too many changes to
filesystem structure to feel completely safe with an Include-based list of
individual save sets).

You can set up a directive if you want that makes use of the "logasm" function
in legato. If you look at the default "Unix Standard Directives" you will see
that /nsr/logs is set up for such a logasm function....this is why you don't
get "daemon.log grew during save".

The only real problem I've ever had with this kind of file; a client had an
Access97 database on their wintel server and the thing was up 24x7, they never
took it down and they never used our standard tool (sqlbacktrack) to sweep the
db to flat file. I always saw the error [changed during save] but was never
bothered by it (because I thought the flat file that SHOULD have been created
was being backed up). Long story short (too late), the DB crashed, corrupted,
and they came screaming for a restore. However, since the db was always live
when we backed it up, we had nothing but useless drek for them. "No recovery
possible.....why weren't you backing up with sqlbacktrack so we could sweep to
tape? Every other DBA does it."

Hello,

I see these "size grew during save" messages (see below) in various
savegroup completion notifications. Seems random but haven't really
analyzed it. Just curious if this is anything to be concerned about?
Does NetWorker take a look at the size of the file before it goes to
back it up and then again after? How does it know.

Thanks.

George
