My assumption is backward compatibility.  I believe that earlier
versions didn't have the option at all, so when it was added it was
added off as default.

Same reason you can't change anything else on the Default pool.  They've
prevented making *bad* changes to the pool by preventing *all* changes
to the pool.

You can of course change it when networker is down.  Stop the daemons,
run nsradmin -f /nsr/res/nsr.res, then update the pool with auto media
verify: yes and the change will stick (same way you change recycle
to/from other pools on the Default pool).

Hmm, to me that's very different.  Having only the most used items
available in the default view is entirely reasonable.  It speeds looking
for things and it prevents a lot of questions when you're becoming
familiar with the product.  Being presented with a list of 50 fields can
be daunting.

As long as you *can* access everything without jumping through hoops
(and I think clicking a single menu item is reasonable), I don't have
any issues with it.
