I've never seen one of these types of drives either.

The other trick that the insanely-desperate can try is to overwrite the
EOT without putting down a new EOT.  This can be done by writing data to
the drive (using something like tar or dd) so that you "know" you're past
the double EOF marks, and then power the tape drive off so that it doesn't
get a chance to write a new double EOF.  It will certainly destroy part
or all of what's immediately after the original EOT, but it might allow
you to get at the rest of the tape.

It's only for the really desperate, though.
