On my LTO2 tapes I am getting anything from 160GB to over680GB per tape.
The backups that are primarily unix are getting the highest compression.
Compression is done on the drives, not at the server/client level.

Different files compress differently (if at all).
Some files, such as streaming video do not compress at all.
Other files, such as text files compress quite well.
