Thanks - Out of the 10 or so I haven't sent away yet, 1 is a Quantum species, 
rest are HP/Compaq brand. Probably same factory?
Further to my original post, I have tried running tar or vdump ( Tru64 unix 
system backup ) over a tape that 
Legato has rejected , and on a different drive, with the same result. I will 
send these tapes away to be replaced by
the supplier/manufacturer (hopefully).
