Fibre doesn't have the distance limitation SCSI has. Fibre drives allow for
sharing/moving of tape devices from host to host without the need to re-cable.
If your using more sophisticated backup techniquies there are other advantages.
Speeds should approach 35MB per sec. I thought I saw 45 MB per sec.

The big advantage of Fibre that I have found (at least in a Windows
environment) is that you don't have to reboot the server when you reboot the
Jukebox. It will rediscover the drives after the Fibre channel tapes come
back up.

I tested SCSI and Fiber connected tape drive and din't find any differnces
in backup speed. New SCSI adapters support 320MB translating rate. LTO2 has
20-25 Mb backup speed (as usual less). So IMHO no differences, only in cost.
Besides, the buttleneck in backup, IMHO, is network, NIC (if you take backup
via network).

Im getting some new HP LTO2 tape drives for my library and i have 2 extra
1GB brocade switches.

Is there a big advantage to getting fibre attached tape drives compared to
scsi?

The legato 7 server is on a mid range sun server running solaris 8.

thanks!
