Based on the feedback from the list, I went ahead and did the drive
upgrade on Friday in preparation for the weekend full backups. One
of the new drives turned out to be bad (it would not mount tapes
correctly), but once I figured out that it was just bad hardware, I was
able to read (and write) to the old tapes just fine on the good drive.
It was a seamless upgrade; I'm very pleased.

Additionally, with these brand new AIT-3 drives (firmware seems to
be 0103) I am not experiencing any of the variable capacity problems
that others reported when using AIT-2 media. Just as a datapoint,
Qualstar had never heard of that problem before, or of a firmware
update for it.
