NT4 and W2k file server data management.

One of the problems with backups is the ever-increasing amount of data that
needs to be backed up. I am looking at ways to manage file server data,
software controls like quotas are being considered and there are some
discussions with the user departments to encourage them to manage there own
areas, (limited response here). We are considering putting a monitor
program into the login script to check the size of each users home
directory when they sign on. This works well for individual home
directories but is more difficult with areas that are shared by large
business units.

I am aware of the disk extender type products, which can move inactive
(archive) files off-line so that they are removed from the backup cycle but
the primary purpose of this investigation is to find ways of reducing the
amount of data stored.

Have any of you come up with any good ideas that are working at your
sites? Any suggestions will be greatly received.
