DOH!

The actual cause was a mismatch between DNS A and PTR records that happened
while swapping machines. Interesting symptom.

While it's unsupported, I'm seeing no problem with redhat 9 and networker
now.

No. They are dropping errata, including critical security fixes, 12 months
after release.

Of course it's open source and backporting will probably be easy, but it's
a reason to evaluate SuSE or Debian (or for some critical systems, RHEL).

The RHEL product line may or may not be good for the enterprise, but it is
clear that the freely available versions no longer are.
