Re: [Networker] Merits of cloning versus dual backups?

Hey Tom,
Here is a small set of the list I gave.
Notice the lines with > are all from the same saveset with other ssid
between them as you can see from the file/rec numbers.
The ssids are not sequential in this list, but the file/rec numbers are.
ie record 2685 of file 309 is before record 3386 of file 309 which is
before record 0 on file 310.
file/rec
309/2685
309/3386
309/3783
309/3936
310/0
...
volume ssid clone id file rec date time

This is exactly what we're trying to clarify. If there is interleaving
on the clone volume this cannot be the case. I'm _almost_ certain now,
unless I'm confused about what file/rec numbers mean that interleaving
remains after cloning. Unless you clone one ssid at a time.
Thanks,
Joel

I don't see any interleaving. I see a sequential list of SSID, file
numbers
and record numbers based on your listing. In a nsrclone session there
can
only be a read on one SSID and an output of that to another tape. This
is
exactly true for cloning a "volume". But remeber that cloning a volume
pulls the SSID list first and starts seq clocing the SSIDs.

Hey Guys,
I just wanted to add this... volume S00354 is a clone volume.
If you notice ssid 2788841986 from my previous post you see that it is
interleaved with many other cloned savesets.
This list is sorted by file and record so unless I'm confused, there is
interleaving going on. As I showed in my last post these are not the
file and rec info from the original volumes.
Sure seems like most people believe that cloning does de-multiplex, but
from what I can tell it certainly doesn't. Unless you clone one ssid at
a time... which would be very slow.
$ mminfo -av -r 'volume(8),ssid,cloneid,mediafile,mediarec,savetime(17)'
-q 'volume=S00354'
volume ssid clone id file rec date time
