I think you'll be OK. We are currently using a 2-way Dell 2650 with 4
Mammoth-2 drives (all on the same SCSI bus) and I can stream around 30MB/s.
I will be upgrading to a 4-way Dell 6650 and 6 GigE ports soon. I'm also
probably going to switch to AIT-3 drives, which I will most likely split
across 2 SCSI buses. The 6650 has 6 separate 100Mhz PCI-X buses capable of
800MB/s, so I'm thinking it will be an improvement. We are running Legato on
Windows 2000 for the server...

the bottleneck will be the PCI-Bus. The Dell works fine with DLT-drives, as
we have. For the LTO we use a SUN.

Have anybody any experience in using dell servers for legato backup?

It looks like those who control the money wants a Dell poweredge 66x0 with
6 LTO-1 drives and possibly 4 giE ports. Operating system not decided yet.

Can we expect the Dell to be able to stream all tape drives? Anybody done
this or something similar yet?
