Sorry I forgot to say that I use savepnpc.exe with a "net stop wins" command. 
It was functioning without a problem for years. Now I cannot say it for sure: 
I'm mailed an incomplete log with the message "* emma:C:\ savegrp: suppressed 
15 lines of output"
