Actually they changed but in a manner I expected.  When I disconnected
drives 0 and 1, leaving drive 3 on, I turned off nst1 and 2.  Linux
automatically put drive 3 at nst0, etc.

I changed all the cables yet again and now it seems to be magically
working.  I'm beginning to hate this thing.  Anyone got an 8mm library
for sale cheap?  :>
