Same here...no issues upgrading many client sites straight from 5.5.x to
6.1.x.

That's total nonsense. It has never been recommended to go to 6.0 before
6.1.x. There is no need for this. I have done this upgrade on several
machines. In any case, running 6.0 is a particularly bad idea as it had a
rather nasty media DB corruption bug.
Challenge them to say why you should go to 6.0 first. I'll bet they can't
give you a good answer.
