We have experienced similar issues with our 9740 and the 9840 media.  We have 
to clean the robot's contacts every so often.  We have found that there is 
residual buildup of some sort.  We clean it an everything's fine.

Take a look at the contacts in the robot that grip the tapes.

A second problem I have seems to be a real hardware related one:
>From time to time (mostly on weekends) specific Tapes realy stuck in the
STK 9840 Tape Devices (STK L700 Library) and when the hand assy pulls
this tape out with force this tape then is an bad cross possition in the
hand assy. The Library stopps working, sending I/O error.
I tried a hundred things and we had StorageTek about 25 time on site to
solve the problem.
I have a customer with about the same hardware and he reports problems
like this too.

Is there anybody out there who has the same problem. I suggest that this
is a constructional flaw of the STK 9840 Tape Devices.
